Logan • Football coach Matt Wells isn't going anywhere, at least if Utah State has anything to say about it.
The Aggies announced Friday that Wells' contract has been extended through the 2019 season. It is Wells' second contract in the past two years.
In a statement, Utah State interim athletic director Jana Doggett said, "It is extremely important to us that we keep Matt and his staff at Utah State long-term, and, I know in my conversations with him, this is exactly what he wants."
According to the school, Wells' contract extension will accompany raises for members of his coaching staff.
"I am very appreciative of the support shown by my university and President [Stan] Albrecht," said Wells. "… I'm as motivated as ever to reset the culture daily that has been established here at Utah State. We will continue to work hard toward our goals of graduating our student-athletes on time and competing for and winning Mountain West championships."
Wells turns 42 on Aug. 10.
He is one of just 14 coaches to lead his alma mater. He is only the second Utah State graduate to be the Aggies' head football coach, joining Chris Pella (1983-85).
Since taking over for Gary Andersen in 2013, Wells has guided the Aggies to a 19-9 overall record, including 13-3 in the Mountain West.
Last season, Utah State finished 10-4. It was the second 10-win season in school history and was culminated by a 21-6 win over UTEP in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl.
Over the past three seasons, Utah State is one of four Football Bowl Subdivision schools with at least 30 wins and three bowl victories. The others are Oregon, Michigan State and Clemson.
