A 21-year-old man was stabbed to death early Saturday in West Valley City.

The victim was identified as Fidenzo Urcino, of Salt Lake City. Police initially said he was shot to death, but the police department corrected itself Saturday afternoon.

West Valley City police Lt. LaMonte Cox said dispatchers received a 2:15 a.m. 911 call from residents who reported hearing shots fired at an apartment complex near 1500 West and 2300 South. Officers who responded to the call found Urcino bleeding on the sidewalk and assumed he had suffered a gunshot wound, Cox said.

Urcino was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Medical personnel then told police Urcino had suffered multiple stab wounds and had not been shot, Cox said.

Police said there was a large number of people at a gathering at the complex for a party, but it wasn't immediately clear why Urcino had been stabbed.

Police had no suspects in custody Saturday evening and the incident remains under investigation, Cox said.
