Hurricane Tigers
The Hurry-Up
Hurricane was a surprise state finalist a year ago, and most coaches in Class 3AA South think the Tigers will be in the mix again this year. "We have the potential to be a good team," said second-year coach Steve Pearson. "We had a great summer in the weight room, and the effort has been really good."
Offense
Hurricane uses a wing-T offense. The Tigers will rely heavily on running backs Nick McDaniel and Jake Carr, who both care coming off great seasons. Quarterback Josh Parker, who gained experience late in the season when he took his first snaps during the state playoffs, will need to grow even more as the starter. Kirt McDaniel and Kyle Williams will be Parker's targets, though Nick McDaniel is also a threat as a receiver.
Defense
Hurricane runs a 3-5 formation. Look for linebacker Angel Bulloch, lineman Quando Ieremia and Kyler Blackmore to enjoy big seasons.
What to expect
Hurricane has a few holes to fill, but has enough experience to challenge Desert Hills for the Class 3AA South title. Most coaches are picking the Tigers to finish second in that tough league this season.
Projected Finish in Region: 2
Big Shoes
If Hurricane wants to make it back to the 3AA finals, Nick McDaniel will have to have another big year. The senior star led the Tigers in rushing, receiving and interceptions a year ago. "Live both [offense and defense]," he said. "I like to hit people and I like to run the ball and score touchdowns. But offense is my first choice."
