Sandy police on Wednesday released Utah Transit Authority video surveillance footage in hopes the public can help bring a rapist to justice.

Sgt. Dean Carriger said the video, captured by UTA cameras at the 9000 South TRAX light rail station, show the suspect — a heavyset, 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-10 Pacific Islander in his mid-20s, with a black afro-style hair, scraggily beard and wearing a Chicago Bulls cap.

The incident occurred about 11 a.m. on Aug. 25. A woman said the suspect followed her off the southbound train onto a pathway, and grabbed her from behind.

During the ensuing assault, the victim fought back by biting the suspect and screaming for help, after which the suspect fled back to the TRAX platform.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sandy police at 801-799-3000.
