Plain City • What a difference a few days can make in the world of Utah high school sports.
At the start of this week, Fremont and Weber were battling for the Region 1 girls' soccer lead, ranked in The Tribune's top five in Class 5A and appeared to be headed to a big confrontation Thursday.
But after Mountain Crest upset Weber on Tuesday and Fremont took a 2-1 victory over the Warriors on Thursday, the Silverwolves find themselves with what appears to be a commanding two-game lead.
"This is exactly what we were after," said Fremont coach Kelly Parker. "We possessed the ball on their end of the field instead of our end this time. We pressed the ball when we were on the field."
Though Fremont didn't score until late in the first half on a shot by Kinsley Napoli, the home team was the aggressor much of the way in a fairly convincing performance.
"I knew I had to get that ball," said Napoli. "When it bounced past that pen defender, I took the shot, hoped it went and it did. We tried our best to pressure nonstop so we could keep the momentum of the game."
Weber came out more aggressive in the second half, but Fremont had all the answers. When Kami Hunter took a pass from Skyla Kimber and bounced it off the Weber goalie and into the net, the Silverwolves had their winning marker.
"That was my first play after coming back in," said Hunter. "I just kicked it off my head and it went in. This sets us up two games and first in region. We need to hold on to this, win every game and have region in the bag."
Weber did give Fremont a scare late when Tristin Kerr scored in extra time and the Warriors kept pressing to put it into overtime. But Silverwolves' goalie Shynanne Jones was up to the task and helped preserve the key victory.
