Tooele • Bruno Carneiro, a 16-year-old race car driver from Riverton, is headed to China.

Officials of the Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, formerly known as Miller Motorsports Park, announced the track's new owners are sending Carneiro to compete in the season-ending round of the Chinese Formula 4 Championship.

The two-race event will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 4 at the Zhuhai International Circuit.

Carneiro began his competitive driving career in kart competition at Miller Motorsports Park when he was 4 years old. He currently competes in a Formula Mazda in the Utah Region of the National Auto Sports Association (NASA). He won the series championship in his first year of driving a full-sized car. He also won the Senior Rotax Class of the Utah Kart Championship.

"We are sending Bruno to Zhuhai as the first step in cementing [our] relationship ... [with] the Chinese racing industry," said Alan Wilson, president of Utah Motorsports Campus. "He's an outstanding young man and an extremely talented driver. We know that he will make Utah proud as a representative of Utah Motorsports Campus."

The Chinese event is one of several international championships utilizing Formula 4 open-wheel race cars. It operates under the auspices of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the international governing body for motor sports.

Formula 4 is intended to be an entry-level series for open-wheel racers, bridging the gap between karting and more advanced forms of racing. The chassis and engines are cost-controlled to make competition cost-effective.

Other countries with Formula 4 championships include Italy, Japan, Britain and Australia, as well as combined championships for Germany, Austria and The Netherlands and Russia, Finland and Estonia.
