Fire destroyed a Cottonwood Heights house on Friday afternoon.

A neighbor of the house near 1900 E. Creek Road (about 7800 South) called 911 shortly after 2 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find the house, which was split into two apartments, "fully involved," said Unified Fire Capt. Dan Brown.

The street was blocked in both directions while about 50 firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the house is a total loss.

"It's still standing, but everything is burned," Brown said. Parts of a garage and a second house also melted.

None of the four people who live in the apartments was home at the time.

Investigators expect that pinpointing what caused the fire will take a long time, Brown added.
