A week after BYU announced that Oregon State defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake will be its new football coach, Southern Utah University finds itself looking for a new head coach.

Sitake announced Saturday that SUU coach Ed Lamb will join his staff as an assistant head coach and special teams coordinator. Lamb was SUU's coach for eight years and has 19 years of football coaching experience.

Lamb "is an experienced head coach with expertise coaching both sides of the ball as well as special teams," Sitake said in a school news release. "I value my great relationship with Ed and I am looking forward to working closely with him at BYU."

A head coach leaving SUU for an assistant's job at a Division I school is not unprecedented in Utah. Oregon State coach Gary Andersen once left SUU for the University of Utah to work with Urban Meyer.

Lamb transferred to BYU from Ricks College in 1994 and played defensive end for the Cougars in 1995 and 1996. He was a graduate assistant at BYU in 2001.

"I am excited to get back to BYU, a place that has been very instrumental in my life," Lamb said. "My time on campus as a Cougar changed my life, and continues to shape who I am today. I am looking forward to working with coach Sitake, who has been a teammate, friend and colleague for over 20 years."

Lamb was the AFCA Region 5 Coach of the Year this past season after leading SUU to the FCS playoffs and the Big Sky Conference championship.

He is a native of Pleasanton, Calif. Before getting the head job at SUU, he coached at the University of San Diego from 2005-07 as the special teams coordinator, recruiting coordinator and defensive backs coach under current Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.

He began his coaching career at the University of Redlands in California in 1997 and has also coached at Idaho.

On Thursday, Sitake announced that Ty Detmer will be his offensive coordinator and Ilaisa Tuiaki will be the defensive coordinator.
