The mother of Darrien Hunt was driving a car that collided with a Utah Highway Patrol cruiser late Tuesday in Tooele County, troopers said.
Susan Hunt, whose son was shot by Saratoga Springs police in 2014, was in the hospital Wednesday with a medical problem unrelated to the collision from the previous night, said UHP Sgt. Todd Royce.
A trooper began looking for a "reckless driver" about 11 p.m. Tuesday after a passerby on State Route 73 reported a westbound vehicle was swerving over the road, according to a UHP report. The trooper turned on his overhead lights as he found a car traveling north on State Route 36 in Stockton, moving in and out of the southbound lane, where the trooper was driving, the report states.
"It's coming right at me," the trooper can be heard saying in dashcam video, right before the oncoming car appears to sideswipe the cruiser. It was traveling slowly when it struck the driver's door of the cruiser, UHP reported.
"It just missed me," the trooper then says on the video. The car stopped and the trooper confronted the driver, whom Royce identified as Hunt. Hunt appeared to be suffering from a medical problem and was taken to a hospital.
"The troopers do suspect some impairment," Royce said. He wouldn't say whether the undisclosed medical problem may have caused impairment, but he said there was evidence of impairment apart from the medical problem. UHP released the dashcam video, but it cuts off when Hunt begins speaking because she discusses private medical issues, Royce said.
Hunt's 22-year-old son Darrien Hunt was shot in a parking lot in September 2014 after a 911 caller reported seeing a man carrying a sword. Darrien Hunt's family said he was cosplaying as a favorite manga comic character when police approached him. Police said he was speaking with them when he pulled out his sword and lunged at them. The two officers chased him and shot him multiple times.
Saratoga Springs offered Susan Hunt a $900,000 settlement, which is the subject of a court dispute.
