One click can put identity theft victims in Utah on the way to recovering their good names. On Monday, the Utah Attorney General's Office launched a new Web site called IRIS - Identity Theft Reporting Information System - where victims can go to file a complaint that will be sent directly to the proper law enforcement agency. The site gives victims step-by-step directions on how to repair their credit and resolve other problems caused by ID theft. Located at http://www.idtheft.utah.gov, the site also includes a section with information on current scams and illegal solicitations. ID theft victims spend an average of 600 hours and $1,400 to recover from the crime, according to the AG's Office, which is collaborating on IRIS with all state law enforcement agencies. The state Bureau of Criminal Identification of the Department of Public Safety, the Automated Geographic Resource Center and Department of Technologies Services provided technical expertise. The Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice and the Utah Bankers Association funded the project, according to a news release from the AG's Office.
