A Ute Tribe member will spend up to five years in federal prison for a fatal shooting on the Uintah-Ouray Indian Reservation.

U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball also sentenced 23-year-old Grant Hubert Checora to 36 months of probation and recommended he participate in Tribal Reentry Court following his release.

Checora wrote in his plea agreement that he acted recklessly when he killed 23-year-old Evan Cuch in June 2014.

Cuch was shot and killed after a confrontation between two groups in Fort Duchesne.

Both Cuch and Checora are members of the tribe.
