It's not exactly two for the price of one when the Sklar brothers perform their stand-up comedy but it sort of is.
Jason and Randy Sklar are headlining four shows at Wiseguys in Salt Lake City on Friday and Saturday, May 13 and 14, and theirs is definitely a partnership that "feels like less than a singular stand-up who has a clear message that is streamlined," Randy Sklar said in an email interview. "It's a different type of performing."
It's not just that they're a duo. It's not just that they're siblings. They're identical twins, and working together "keeps us close in real life."
"We always say to people the best part of working together as a duo is sharing the money. If they immediately laugh, we know they get sarcasm."
The "added layer" to a two-person team "can make it more complex and interesting," but the Sklars work to avoid making the show "feel clunky and needlessly complicated."
"There is a shared understanding that goes back many years, and we can feel people watching that get played out onstage," Randy Sklar said. "There is a shorthand and intimacy that we share as twin brothers."
They have a history that makes them "unique."
"The key for us has been trying to exploit that aspect while not depending on it," he said. "There is something interesting about seeing two brothers riff on something and have fun with it. Or bust on each other or try and work something out onstage."
The Sklars have been performing stand-up together since 1994, when they were just 22. They have a long list of acting credits, both alone and together including "Entourage," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Grey's Anatomy" (playing conjoined twins) and the animated series "The Oblongs" (voicing conjoined twins). They starred in "Cheap Seats" on ESPN Classic, and they've guest hosted Jim Rome's sports-talk radio shows.
The brothers had two stand-up comedy specials on Comedy Central and another on Netflix.
"We feel like our stand-up has evolved, even from the last special we shot for Netflix in 2014," Randy Sklar said, "and the material we are doing is deeper and more meaningful, but still in our style."
And that includes tailoring part of their act to the city in which they're performing.
"We have really enjoyed our performances in the past in Utah and can't wait to unleash this new hour of material on the people of SLC," Randy Sklar said. "And maybe Karl Malone."
