Woods Cross • There was no golden goal at the end of the rainbow that spanned the Woods Cross pitch Tuesday night.

That meant Viewmont would need penalty kicks to earn a victory over Lone Peak and earn the right to play for the 5A boys' soccer title.

In a tense matchup that featured great saves by the Vikings' Tyler Trump and the Knights' Robbie Swanson that ended in a 1-all tie after two overtimes, Viewmont won the shootout 4-2.

The Vikings got shootout goals from Dawson Meldrum, Brennan Ewell, Caleb Reese and McKay Wyman and took advantage of two Lone Peak shots that went high.

This was anything but easy for Viewmont, which fell behind 1-0 in the first half and needed a penalty kick from star Drake Cook with 11 minutes to play in the game to force overtime.

"This team has been a second half team the whole year," said Viking coach Spencer Keddington, who is in his first year as the head coach at Viewmont. "They never stop playing. This was a phenomenal ending. Lone Peak is a great team and we were happy to survive."

Cook has been on a roll in recent weeks. This was the eighth straight regulation goal he has scored in the Vikes' run to Thursday's state title game at Juan Diego.

He said he didn't see the penalty that was called inside the goal box that led to his penalty kick late in the second half.

"I just saw the ref called PK and I thought I am going to score this and now we're back in this game. I just stepped up. I've known Robbie a long time and he tried to talk to me. I just buried it."

Lone Peak dominated the game early, forcing Trump to make some acrobatic saves to keep Viewmont in it.

The Knights goal came in the 39th minute on a beautiful crossing pass from Tyler Gundred to Justin Jones he buried it from close range.

Trump said that he felt some pressure during the shootout but his experience in intense games helped him prepare. He did get a hand on Lone Peak's first shootout goal that got past the line.

"They had some chances," said Trump about Lone Peak's play in regulation. "We held tough. Our defense played well."

Though usually in the state championship mix, Viewmont will be searching for its first boys' soccer state title since 1995.

Fremont 2, Sky View 1 (OT) • The Silver Wolves won the rubber match between these two Region 1 teams in dramatic fashion.

Fremont scored the golden goal 42 seconds into the first overtime against the evenly matched squads to advance to the 5A state final Thursday at 7 p.m. at Juan Diego High School.

The Silver Wolves, who finished tied with Sky View for second place after splitting the first two games, will be playing for their first boys' soccer title. —
