One person is dead and six people went to the hospital after a Friday afternoon crash on U.S. Highway 40 in Uintah County, according to a new release from the Utah Highway Patrol.

At about 1:50 p.m., a car was heading west near mile marker 138 — about seven miles west of Vernal — when it struck another car that was stopped in the westbound lane, attempting to turn left onto McCoy Flats Road, the UHP said.

The first car, driven by Roosevelt resident Shirley Shiner, 69, pushed the second car, carrying 17-year-old driver Cierra Cook and 19-year-old passenger Sandon Marshall, both of Vernal, into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lane.

A pickup truck — carrying 63-year-old driver Sadine Chimburas, of Whiterocks, and Gracelyn Blackhair, 9, Daelyn Bascom, 8, and Kyler Evans, 3, all of Fort Duchesne — then crashed into the second car.

Marshall was pronounced dead at the scene, and Cook was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

Shiner, Chimburas and Blackhair were transported to the hospital in serious condition, and Bascom and Evans were checked and released from the hospital later Friday.
