With candles aglow, Utahns gathered Friday night at Salt Lake City's Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church to remember nine people who were killed a year ago at another historic black church more than 2,000 miles away.

On June 17, 2015, a gunman walked into a Bible study and shot dead nine worshippers at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C.

Trinity AME planned Friday's candlelight vigil to "show our solidarity of our fellow slain AME church members," according to a news release.

The Salt Lake City church, 239 E. 600 South, will hold a program honoring the Charleston Nine on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
