Rio de Janeiro • Australia started poorly and never recovered in an 87-61 loss to Serbia in the semifinals of the Olympic men's basketball tournament Friday night.

The Boomers fell behind 16-5 after the first quarter and 35-14 at halftime, having made 6 of 29 shots from the field and committed 11 turnovers.

Australia will meet Spain for the bronze medal Sunday.

The Aussies had shot 51.7 percent and averaged 89 points through six games of the tournament — including a 95-80 win over Serbia in group play. But Serbia dominated this game from the start, scoring the first eight points and never being challenged.

The Jazz's Joe Ingles scored 12 points and former University of Utah star Andrew Bogut added four points and one rebound for Australia.
