Only last year, David Blair learned he was eligible for the Paralympics. The former Davis High School and Weber State star soon resumed discus throwing after 16 years away from track and field, and he won a Paralympics gold medal Friday in Rio de Janeiro.

The 40-year-old Blair, who lives in Eagle Mountain, threw the discus 64.11 meters (about 210 feet) to finish well ahead of Akeem Stewart of Trinidad & Tobago (61.72) and Dan Greave of Great Britain (59.57).

Born with a club foot, a condition addressed by several surgeries as a child, Blair won a state championship in the discus for Davis in 1993 and claimed Big Sky Conference titles in the hammer and weight throw for Weber State. In the 2015 World Championships, Blair earned a silver medal in the shot put and a bronze in the discus. In May, he was named the Male Adaptive Athlete of the Year in the Governor's State of Sport Awards.

Fremont High School graduate Marybai Huking earned a bronze medal as part of the USA women's goalball team. The Americans beat Brazil 3-2 with Jen Armbruster scoring all three goals, after having lost 11-1 to Turkey in the semifinals.
