A Salt Lake City police officer shot at and missed a fleeing suspect Saturday evening.
The officer was responding to a call for trespassing near 1300 South and 170 West about 4:30 p.m., said SLCPD Detective Cody Lougy.
When the officer arrived at the scene, at least two people fled from an alley in different directions. He chased on foot one of the suspects, who apparently yelled "I'm not going back to prison," Lougy said.
After "some kind of altercation," the officer fired one round at the suspect a parole fugitive now in police custody but missed, Lougy said. Neither was injured.
It is unclear whether the suspect had a weapon, Lougy said, but he did have something in his hands. The suspect's name and age were not been released Saturday. Police did not say why the man had been in prison.
Unified Police Department will investigate the shooting. The officer, whose name was not released, will be placed on paid leave.
Police closed 1300 South from 300 West to West Temple. Officers anticipate reopening the section by 9 p.m.
