Laura Sharp Wilson, "Thread, Strand, Rope and Yarn"

What • Commissioned to create the 5,000-square-foot terrazzo floor in the lobby.

Design • Abstract representation of historic Salt Lake Valley pathways as well as weavings by the area's American Indian settlers and later Utah pioneers. She drew upon a dusky color palette inspired by early-morning hikes and the colors seen on Antelope Island. "I was thinking of sage and wheat and tan or khaki colors, as well as the purple flowers that bloom here," says the Utah-based artist, in contrast to the architect-selected pearl luminescent background.

Inspiration • "I was trying to come up with something that reflected Utah and worked within the color scheme and the lightness (and geometric design) of the building."

Paul Housberg, "Ribbons of Time"

What • Commissioned to create 100 bent glass panels, each 4 by 8 feet, for the balconies in the six-story open lobby.

Design • Features more than 40 colors of glass in the red, yellow, blue and purple ranges, "natural colors that I associate with Utah, the desert and mountains and sunsets," says the Rhode Island-based glass artist. "There's a sequence of colors, and a certain element of randomness, to create elements of discovery. The deepest colors — the blues and purples — fall where the balconies belly out. The reds at the northern end provide a target or jewel that you might see in the distance. When you look up, that's where the most intense reds and oranges are."

Inspiration • The title refers to both geological strata and the idea that music, dance and theater are all time-based arts, the artist says. "I don't think of it as a stand-alone work of art with a capital 'A.' It's more what happens when you bring an artist into the collaborative design process."

Traci O'Very Covey, "Imagine"

What • Hand-drawn mural digitalized into vinyl and affixed to the loading dock door.

Size • 14 feet tall by 42 ½ feet long

Design • Colorful, stylized images of a performer in the spotlight, with day and nighttime representations of food and audience members.

Inspiration • "The bold and lively imagery in the mural portrays a theatrical and festive place in a unique design composition that offers the viewer a sense of discovery," Covey says in a design statement. "The visual elements in the art are evocative of theater, restaurants, a festive atmosphere and gathering place of diverse people, which all come together in a colorful, appealing and engaging design composition." —
