A Salt Lake City 7-Eleven clerk grabbed his handgun and gave chase when three men grabbed items from the store's shelves and fled.

The suspects ambushed the clerk as he chased them on foot, beating him and taking his gun away outside the store at 1690 S. 900 West about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, police say.

SLCPD detectives say that the clerk suffered minor injuries, but the fight may have slowed down, and eventually foiled the suspects' getaway. Arriving police were able to find the trio about six blocks away and took them — and the stolen gun — into custody.

The three — males ages 19, 19 and 18 — were booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of robbery and theft of a firearm.
