Tax scheme

Sandy dentist who claimed exemption is ordered to jail

Sandy dentist Gary K. Clark has been ordered to jail for failing to pay back income taxes because of his involvement in a scheme in which he claimed his "sovereignty" exempted him from Utah tax laws, prosecutors say.

"It's about time Dr. Clark admitted his poor behavior and started giving back what he owes to society," Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff said Monday.

"People who fail to pay taxes are basically asking you and me to pick up their share for roads, schools and everything else."

A judge last week ordered Clark to spend two days in jail, serve three years probation and pay nearly $200,000 toward back income taxes and penalties.

Clark admitted his part in the tax-avoidance scheme, has paid $150,000 and must make monthly payments of $3,000 until the total amount is paid, state officials said.
