Sandy • Each season crowns new champions that later become long forgotten. Few teams are remembered forever.

The Davis girls' soccer program is one of the latter.

After losing six Division 1 players from their USA Today national championship team in 2015, the Darts never skipped a beat, repeating an undefeated 20-0 campaign and extending their winning streak to 44 consecutive games — a state record — with a 2-1 decision over Fremont in the Class 5A state championship at Rio Tinto Stadium on Friday.

"This year everybody was against us. It's the sweetest victory because everyone was against us," said Olivia Wade. "... All the hard work all year long finally paid off. State champions three times in a row — that's unbelievable. I'm so proud."

Davis became the fourth program in state history to win three consecutive state titles, joining Alta (2006-09), Mountain View (2000-02) and Olympus (1994-96).

"Two and a half years, game in and game out, everybody wants a shot at us. These girls stand here and say, 'Give us your best shot. We'll take it,' " said Davis coach Souli Phongsavath. "It's really rewarding. I'm so proud of them."

The Darts finished with 112 goals on the season, an average of 5.6 per game, while surrendering only eight goals, 0.4 per outing.

"It's the best feeling in the world," said Mikayla Colohan. "Just like icing on the cake. You always want [to win the state championship in your senior year]; I wanted it just as bad [as the other titles], but being in that last game I'll ever play for Davis High meant that much more."

Wade furnished Davis' first lead 23 minutes into the match. It was Wade's 39th goal of the season, the most in the state this season and the sixth-most in state history.

But Courtney Talbot recorded the equalizer for the Silver Wolves (16-2-1) seconds later to tie it at 1.

"There was for me," Phongsavath said when asked if there was any panic when the game was tied. "But I don't think there was for them, and that's why they were able to come back right away."

The Darts recaptured the advantage before halftime when Mikayla Colohan scored from 35 yards out. The shot ricocheted off the left post and into the right-hand corner in the 35th minute. Colohan finished with 27 goals on the season.

"I beat my defender and luckily I got a good shot off," Colohan said. "I started celebrating and I saw it hit the post. I didn't know, and then I saw it went in and I'm like, 'Thank you.' "

Davis controlled the second half by compacting its defense, rather than potentially affording Fremont an opportunity to capitalize on a counterattack. The strategy, especially with Kendyl Baker between the posts, prevented the Wolves from generating consistent threats in the final 40 minutes.

"Freaking amazing. It proved that no matter how our region was, that we are the best," said Baker, who had 13 shutouts this season, including three in the playoffs. "I'm so glad we were able to pull it out tonight. We can finally breathe."
