Weber County educator and former Utah State basketball player Reid Newey will serve as the new Davis School District superintendent.
The district's board of education appointed Newey on Tuesday night, replacing Bryan Bowles, who announced his retirement in July after 14 years in the post.
Newey is an assistant superintendent with Weber School District and was among 10 candidates who interviewed for the position. He is expected to begin his term as superintendent on Dec. 1, according to a news release from Davis School District.
"I believe in educating the 'whole child' by proving meaningful, positive experiences with people who are invested and caring," Newey wrote in his application, according to the release. "Children should be prepared to compete intellectually, creatively and technically in a rapidly changing world."
Newey has 28 years of experience in education, beginning as a teacher at Clearfield High School. He also previously worked as an assistant basketball coach at Utah State University, where he got his bachelor's in health education and master's in physical education and recreation. He played basketball for the university and was the team's captain in 1988, the release states, later going on to play professionally in Belgium.
Newey also taught at Fremont and Weber high schools, later serving as principal of the former and an assistant principal at the latter. He was principal at North Ogden Junior High School.
He has worked in several director positions with Weber School District.
For the Davis superintendent position, Newey was chosen over 28 other candidates, said district spokesman Chris Williams. Of the final 10, seven applicants were from inside the district and three were from outside the district.
