Hale Centre Theatre marked the end of major concrete and steel work Friday for its 130,000-square-foot, two-theater complex in Sandy and announced naming rights to Mountain America Credit Union.

A huge construction crane placed a 660-pound signed white beam and an evergreen tree atop the $70 million performing arts structure that will be called the Mountain America Performing Arts Centre when it opens in 2017.

"Hale Centre Theatre is such an important part of the Utah community and we are proud to place our name and theirs side by side in Sandy City," Sterling Nielsen, president and CEO of Mountain America Credit Union, said in a statement. "The theatre has uplifted our employees and communities over the years and now will become an integral part of our Mountain America family."

HCT thanked more than 200 construction workers, engineers, architects and others for their work as part of the topping out ceremony, a traditional Scandinavian rite that celebrates a safe and successful construction project. Throughout the week, Sandy officials, community dignitaries and Hale Centre Theatre employees were invited to sign their names on the ceremonial white beam.

Headed by Layton Construction, laborers removed 72,400 cubic yards of dirt for the complex and placed 9,200 cubic yards of concrete, 1,800 tons of structural steel and 1,700 tons of reinforcing steel. The towering theater is at 9900 Monroe Street right off Interstate 15.

The company plans to open its smaller 460-seat theater in September 2017 with a production of "Forever Plaid," followed by the November opening of "Aida" on the new 900-seat arena stage. When completed, the theater company dedicated to family friendly shows will expand to present 700 performances annually.
