A reason Republicans should support the national popular vote is that the two most recent losers of the popular vote, but winners of the Electoral College vote, were Republicans. It could go the other way any time. So, before Republicans have to feel the anger and disenfranchisement of losing the presidency despite winning the popular vote, best to change the system now, before a Democrat gets elected by the winner-take-all system of the Electoral College.
