Provo • After cleaning up routines and practicing hard landings, the Utes logged a 49.3 on the vault in their 196.9-194.175 win over BYU on Friday. The vault score was two-tenths higher than what they'd earned in their home opener against Michigan last Saturday.

The biggest difference came in the landings; the Utes did a much better job of sticking them Friday than they did against the Wolverines.

All of Utah's counting scores were 9.825 or higher against the Cougars, with MaKenna Merrell and MyKayla Skinner tying for top honors at 9.9.

Improving the vault difficulty was a point of emphasis for the Utes in the offseason, so they knew it might be a few meets before the landings were made consistently.

"It is a numbers game," sophomore Sabrina Schwab said. "The more we go out there, the more confident we get in our landings, the better we get."

Getting noticed

Macey Roberts continues to stand out in the floor exercise, the only event in which she is currently competing.

Roberts, a sophomore who transfered to Utah from Maryland this summer, scored a 9.85 in the opener against Michigan and scored a 9.825 on Friday.

Take that

Utah junior Tiffani Lewis made a statement at the end of her floor routine Friday, ending her routine by pounding the Cougar logo, then flashing the 'U' sign.

Lewis said she changed the ending of her floor routine after discussing it with co-coach Megan Marsden and assistant Meredith Paulicivic.

"It was a lot of fun coming up with it right before the meet," she said. "It was a last minute change."
