Provo • A state champion swimmer occasionally might be asked to wear his or her first-place medals for a pool-side photo.

Be careful, though, when it comes to asking Park City's Rozie Selznick.

Deep water could be very treacherous indeed, even for a swimmer of Selznick's quality, if she were to wear all of them at once.

Selznick added to her enormous bounty of titles when she won the 50-yard freestyle and was the anchor leg for Park City's 200-yard medley relay first-place team Friday as the Class 3A state swimming championships began at the BYU pool.

That brings the total to six individual crowns and six more on relays for an even dozen during her high school career — with the potential for two more Saturday.

The Miners senior helped out with the count as much as she could.

A third-place finish in the 500 freestyle in 2014, she remembered. But a state championship in the 200 freestyle back in 2014, her first individual title, is what tripped her up.

"It's been a while," said Selznick on not quite remembering the outcome of that race as a freshman. "But when it's put into perspective, it's really cool."

Selznick, who had two older sisters also win championships with Park City, said that the winning has not gotten routine for her.

"Not at all. Every year, there's a group of girls who push me," she said. "Like, for instance, the Gross sisters [from Cedar High]. I only get to swim against them once, and that's at state."

Selznick made the most of her chance against Cedar senior Kristen Gross in the 50 freestyle, beating back her much-taller rival in the sprint.

"Even on the podium, she was taller than me," said Selznick, although her position was elevated a half-foot over the second-place platform.

The Park City contingent, as expected, ruled the day as Miners came into each event except one with the top preliminary time. And sophomore Elise Beller turned the one where a Park City swimmer didn't have the top mark — the 200 freestyle — into a Miners' victory.

Beller earned her 2:02.20 qualifying mark at a region meet two weeks ago, but that was almost 2 seconds shy of the top time from Juan Diego's Abby Whittington. But in crunch time, Beller sliced 5 seconds off her time and cruised to a win in 1:57.11.

"It's nerve-wracking because Park City has all those other events seeded first," Beller said. "I was tapered, I shaved my legs — I was just really ready for this meet."

The Miners dominate everything.

Ridgeline senior Karson Christensen pulled away from Park City's Dennis Djunic for an individual crown in the 50 freestyle.

Earlier in the 200 freestyle, Hurricane's Ryan Bunn surpassed Miners senior Alex Yokubison to claim a first-place medal. Bunn shot out to a lead early then held on, according to the sophomore, for dear life to win the championship.

Bunn finished in 1:45.62, while Yokubison was just behind at 1:45.71. The Hurricane swimmer had one word to explain how the last few yards felt.

"Dead," Bunn said. "I barely got out of the pool." —
