Provo • The Maile sisters were starting to become a known commodity in the high school swimming ranks a year ago.

In New Mexico.

But Utah quickly is forging a special place in the girls' hearts as both of the Viewmont athletes are claiming titles in their new home state.

Sophomore Mariah Maile was expected to continue something she started while competing for Volcano Vista in Albuquerque, where she won the 100-yard backstroke.

And she did.

The Vikings standout won the 100 freestyle by more than a second at Day 2 of the Class 5A swimming championships.

But even before Mariah hit the water, her older sister MJ had accomplished something of her own.

The elder Maile sibling, whose best result in New Mexico was seventh in the 100 butterfly last year, raced to victory in that same event contested Friday at the BYU pool.

"I'm so proud. It's awesome because when it was just me last year, it was hard on my sister, I guess," Mariah Maile said. "It's nice to share it, and our parents are really proud of us. And it's the first time for my grandpa to see us swim, so we're going to go celebrate."

"It's a great sister combo. They cheer for each other and they're great for our team," said Viewmont coach Steve Doman, who had a third champion when Zachary Julien touched first in the 100 butterfly.

But the glory was spread in all directions at the 5A state meet.

Cottonwood had two double-champions as Rhyan White backed up an individual victory Thursday by winning the 100 backstroke, and Christian Simon's win in the 100 freestyle came a day after his title in the 50 freestyle.

Another Colts swimmer, Blayze Kimble, came close to getting two titles, but he was edged by Brighton's Jack Binder in the 100 breaststroke.

The boys' team championship belonged to Lone Peak after the Knights' freestyle relay wins at 200 and 400 and an individual crown by junior Josh Ries in the 100 backstroke. Ries lost out by only four one-hundredths of a second in the same event in 2016.

"I thought about that every day and it [made] me work harder every day in practice," Ries said.

In the girls' team standings, Sky View grabbed the championship behind junior Megan Kimble anchoring the Bobcats' wins in both of the freestyle relays. Sky View also grabbed a title when senior Alexa Walters touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke.

"I just couldn't believe it because, last year, I went in ranked first and I ended up fourth," Walters said. "To come back and win my senior year, the feeling is just unexplainable." —
