There were only five Layton players on the floor at any given time, but it might take some work to convince Lehi of that fact.

Layton used quick hands and uncanny anticipation to force 20 turnovers and blow out Lehi 76-43 in the first round of the Class 5A boys' basketball state tournament Monday evening.

Truman Brown scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the first half, and the Lancers (16-6) avoided joining Sky View as region champs to fall on the first day of the tournament.

"We were just moving the ball really well," Brown said. "It felt good."

Brown had outscored the entire Lehi team 16-5 at one point in the second quarter. He mad back-to-back 3-pointers and scored the Lancers' first eight points of the second quarter.

He banked in his fourth 3-pointer of the game to beat the third-quarter buzzer, and the rout was on. Layton meets Copper Hills at 2:30 p.m. in Wednesday's quarterfinals at Weber State.

Brown did all this one game after being shut out of the points column in the Lancers' regular-season finale against Hunter.

"It's just having confidence, knowing he's a good shooter," Layton coach Kelby Miller said. "He's definitely the type of kid who can get it going for us. Over the last few days of practice we've just really been pumping him to keep shooting and be confident in his shot."

Ethan Tuckett had 18 points for Lehi (10-14), which was playing in the first round for the first time since 2011. The Pioneers never led and trailed by double figures for almost three quarters.

Blake Hansen had 16 points and Brooks Kokkola added 11 points off the bench for the Region 2 champs, who won for the 10th time in its past 11 games.

"We knew we had to come ready to play, no matter who it was," Hansen said. "Our defense was good. We were flying around. And we took care of the ball for the most part."

Hansen had five steals as the Lancers were a step quicker and two steps faster all game.

"We moved really well and trusted each other," Brown said. "Especially with the 1-3-1 [zone defense], when we trust each other, we can do it really well." —
