Orem • After two straight thrillers in the opening round of the Class 4A boys' basketball tournament, the fans at Utah Valley University got ready to see what promised to be another tightly fought contest.

But Corner Canyon took the fight out of Bountiful as the third-seed out of Region 7 cruised 62-42 in a game with little suspense.

Guards John Mitchell and Michael Scheffner led the balanced Chargers' attack by scoring 14 points apiece, and Hayden Welling added 11.

Offensive firepower was a bit of an after-thought when it came to preparing for Bountiful, the second-seeded team out of Region 5.

"I told the kids before the game that what's going to be successful — what always is, in my 29 years of coaching — is defense," Corner Canyon coach Dan Lunt said. "We didn't shoot the ball [all] game, but the defense was there, and that's what carried us."

The biggest weapon, figuratively and literally, for Bountiful (9-15) was 7-footer Ryan Pollard, who scored the first two baskets of the contest.

But it didn't take long for Pollard to head to the bench with two fouls, and Corner Canyon (16-7) clicked off 11 consecutive points to lead 11-4 at the end of one quarter.

The Braves rallied in the second and tied the game at 14-14 after a bucket by Jadon Chism and two free throws from Cooper Ohlson. With Pollard still sitting, Corner Canyon went on another 11-0 run in the second period.

"With a lot of the teams we play, I think we've given up 57 points a game, but some teams in our league are averaging in the mid-70s," Lunt said. "Obviously, we just adjust to our opponent, and we'll have to do it again for whoever wins this next game."

Whatever chances Bountiful had of staging a comeback went away for good when Scheffner raced into the lane for a basket with 3:54 left. That field goal and a follow-up free throw, after being fouled, gave the Chargers a 53-36 lead.

Pollard finally got into a rhythm similar to the opening moments of the contest, but that happened only after Corner Canyon was holding a double-digit lead. So based upon the long amount of time the Bountiful big man spent on the bench in foul trouble, it was mission accomplished for the Chargers.

"We wanted to attack him, try to get him in foul trouble, get him out of the game," Scheffner said. —
