Youth will be served

The Utah Symphony announces its 51st annual Salute to Youth concert. New music director Thierry Fischer will conduct. The nine young soloists, selected from a series of auditions, are pianists Anthony Cheng, 11, of Sandy, and Natalie Coombs, 17, of Draper; soprano Anna Humphries, 17, of Provo; mezzo-soprano Rebecca Pedersen, 18, of Salem; and five violinists: Samantha Anderson, 17, and Shenae Anderson, 12, of Draper, Maren Davis, 15, of Oakley, Douglas Benson Ferry, 16, of Corinne, and David Price, 18, of Sandy. They will perform concerto movements or arias by Vivaldi, Handel, Mozart, Sibelius, Sarasate, Puccini and Rachmaninoff.

Hot jazz

The Red Rock Hot Club will give two concerts as part of the National Arts and Humanities month. The Gypsy jazz group will joined by Steve Keen, University of Utah Jazz professor; Aaron Ashton, named Outstanding Violinist at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival; and clarinetist Scott Harris, who has played with Ballet West and the Utah Symphony.

Novacek in Park City

The Park City Autumn Classics Music Festival presents international concert pianist John Novacek. He will perform works by Schumann, Shostakovich and Dvorák. He has performed on several television and radio programs, such as NPR's "Performance Today," "The Record Shelf," "First Hearing" and "St. Paul Sunday." Novacek is also the winner of the Leschetizky and Joanna Hodges International piano competitions.

The Wright stuff

Pianist Josh Wright of Sandy took first place in the Seattle International Piano Competition last weekend at Benaroya Hall. He was one of six finalists in the collegiate division. Wright, 22, noted that he was accepted to the same competition last year but had to withdraw because he married pianist Lindsey Lambert that weekend.
