Beaver • The "B" on the hill was lit and the end zone cannon loaded. The stands filled to overflowing for the big homecoming game. Pickup trucks with fans sitting in the beds surrounded D. Alfred Marshall Field. Everything seemed set for a big Beaver night.
Someone forgot to tell Enterprise, though, as the Wolves blasted the Beavers 42-20 behind the play of quarterback Slade Moyle in a battle between two of Utah's top rated 2A football powers.
"It is so freakin' tough," said Moyle, who threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score. "Us and Beaver is the biggest rivalry in 2A. They hate our guts."
Enterprise coach Barry Jones echoed those thoughts.
"To beat them on their home field on homecoming, we're happy," he grinned.
The Wolves scored their first three touchdowns on fourth-down plays to take a 21-7 lead.
The first came on a 38-yard pass from Moyle to Josh Pasini. Moyle then found Sage Palmer on a 21-yard pass play to make it 14-0. Beaver fought back, however, on a 17-yard run by Anthony Gibson to make it 14-7 at halftime.
Then, on the opening drive of the second half, Moyle raced 49 yards to set up a 5-yard run again on fourth down by Sage Palmer.
"That's way tough," said Moyle of the fourth down conversions. "Everyone had to step it up."
Jones praised Moyle, who also played safety, for being a smart player.
"Beaver is a good team but we thought we could score on them," he said.
The Beavers fought back to give their large homecoming crowd hope on a one-yard run by Slade Edwards with 5:04 left in the third quarter. But 21-14 was as close as they would get as Moyle took over.
The Enterprise quarterback scored on a four-yard run and then found Pasini on a 56-yard pass to make it 34-14. When Joe Holt recovered a fumble in the end zone and Moyle hit Morgun Phelps for two, it was 42-14.
Moyle finished with 50 yards rushing and 15 of 23 for 302 yards passing.
The game had a bizarre finish. Enterprise tried to take a knee and it appeared time ran out. But the officials ruled the Wolves had fumbled and Beaver managed a 13-yard touchdown run by Edwards as time ran out.
