Guadalajara, Mexico • All-Star catcher Salvador Perez injured his left knee in a home-plate collision with Drew Butera, his backup with the Kansas City Royals, and Venezuela rallied to beat Italy 11-10 Saturday in the World Baseball Classic on Martin Prado's 10th-inning double.
Italy's Butera stumbled into Perez to end the ninth inning with the score tied at 10. Butera appeared to try limiting contact with Perez but still fell into his left knee, and Perez struggled to put weight on the leg as he was helped off the field.
"Salvador has a loose knee and he's going to go to the clinic for X-rays to see if everything is fine," Venezuela manager Omar Vizquel said. "Right now, he's a question mark for tomorrow's game."
Tigers reliever Francisco Rodriguez was also injured on the play. The Venezuelan right-hander made a relay toss to Perez, then fell to the ground. It was unclear what his injury was.
Perez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to put Venezuela ahead 10-8. Perez is a four-time All-Star and Gold Glove Award winner.
Dominican Republic 7, United States 5 • In Miami, Nelson Cruz hit a go-ahead, three-run homer off Andrew Miller in the eighth inning, Starling Marte added a solo shot off the All-Star reliever and the defending champion Dominican Republic overcame a five-run deficit to beat the United States.
The comeback delighted a clamorous crowd of 37,446, the largest for baseball in the five-year history of Marlins Park.
The U.S. fell to 1-1 and is in jeopardy of being eliminated in the first round. The Americans, who play Canada on Sunday, failed to reach the three previous WBC finals.
Around the horn
Blue Jays • Reliever T.J. House was released from a hospital, one day after he was hit on the head by a line drive during a spring training game. House arrived at Toronto's spring training ballpark during Saturday's game in Dunedin, Fla., between the Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies. "No fractures of the skull or anything, which is great, especially for the force it took," House said.
Red Sox • Left-hander David Price was ahead of schedule for the first step in his recovery from a sore elbow, throwing into a net in a batting cage. Manager John Farrell said Price made 25 easy tosses before a Red Sox split squad played the Tampa Bay Rays.
