Las Vegas • It's little comfort for the Utah Valley men's basketball team, but they can certainly say nobody has ever come closer than they did to advancing to the WAC championship game without getting there.

The fourth-seeded Wolverines were on the losing end of the first quadruple-overtime game in WAC tournament history when they fell to Cal State Bakersfield, 81-80, Friday night in the Orleans Arena.

CS Bakersfield (22-8) advances to Saturday's championship game despite having shot 30 percent and trailing 49-41 with 2:40 left in regulation. CS Bakersfield outscored the Wolverines 11-3 in the rest of regulation to send the game to overtime after Jaylin Airington's layup high off the glass tied the score at 52 with 15.6 seconds left.

The game ended more than three hours after it tipped off. When the dust cleared, five players had fouled out, 78 free throws had been attempted (Bakersfield set tournament records for free throws made with 32 and attempted with 45), 44 turnovers were committed (28 by Utah Valley — a tournament record) and surprisingly only 12 3-pointers.

Airington scored a game-high 22 points. Bedrick Basile (18 points), Matt Smith (14 points), Shon Briggs (13 points) rounded out the scoring for CS Bakersfield.

Senior guard Ivory Young and redshirt junior Kenneth Ogbe led the Wolverines (15-16) with 15 points apiece, while Jordan Poydras added 13. Isaac Neilson grabbed 16 rebounds in 22 minutes before he fouled out with 2:29 remaining in regulation.

Fallou Ndoye's jump hook with 1:35 remaining in the fourth overtime gave CS Bakersfield an 81-78 lead, but Andrew Bastien (six points, 12 rebounds) made a layup while being fouled to pull the Wolverines within one point with 1:23 left.

A missed jumper by Bakersfield's Basile gave the Wolverines an opportunity to go ahead, but Poydras missed a 3-point try. Damiyne Durham's 3-pointer could have all but clinched the win for Bakersfield with 17 seconds left, but he misfired and Poydras came down with the rebound for the Wolverines.

Coming out of a timeout with 8.2 seconds left, Young darted toward the basket and missed a layup off the side of the backboard. CS Bakersfield's Aly Moataz missed two free throws with 0.9 seconds left, but it was too late for anything more than a three-quarters-court heave by the Wolverines as time expired.
