Saying the job for the past four years as president and CEO of the Sandy Area Chamber of Commerce was a "positive place to be as opposed to politics," Nancy Workman announced her retirement Thursday.

The former one-term Salt Lake County mayor, who also served 1½ terms as county recorder, will be honored for her chamber work Wednesday with a luncheon at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Workman said she was looking forward to spending a lot more time with her grandchildren.

"Exciting, exciting, exciting," she said. Her last day is Oct. 15.

Workman took over leadership of the chamber in 2006 after she took a year off in the wake of being forced out of the Salt Lake County Mayor's Office in late 2004.

A Republican, she had been indicted for using county funds to hire workers for a charitable organization managed by her daughter. She later was cleared of those allegations.

Deputy Mayor Alan Dayton took over the mayor's job for four months. Her departure led to the election of Democrat Peter Corroon, now in his second term.

When Workman arrived at the chamber, it had a membership of 200; that number has grown to 650.

"The number of programs we now offer our membership is staggering," she said. She hopes that her successor, who now is being chosen by the board of directors, will push that number to 1,000. —
