Minneapolis • Josef Martinez had three goals, Miguel Almiron scored twice and Atlanta United spoiled fellow expansion club Minnesota United's snowy home opener with a 6-1 victory Sunday.

Jacob Peterson scored the last goal for Atlanta, which joined MLS this season with Minnesota for the league's 21st and 22 teams. Atlanta was coming off a 2-1 home loss to the New York Red Bulls in its opener.

A bright orange ball was used for better visibility Sunday, and there were multiple stoppages in play so the lines could be cleared with blowers. The announced crowd at the University of Minnesota football stadium was 35,043.

Kevin Molino scored for the Loons.

Timbers 1, Galaxy 0 • In Carson, Calif., Diego Chara scored in the eighth minute for his seventh career goal in seven MLS seasons and Portland beat undermanned Los Angeles. Portland (2-0-0), which went winless on the road last season, won for the first time away from home since beating the Galaxy on Oct. 8, 2015.

New York City FC 4, D.C. United 0 • In New York, David Villa scored two goals and newcomers Rodney Wallace and Maxi Moralez also scored for New York City to overshadow 2016 Hermann Trophy winner Ian Harkes' MLS debut for D.C. United.

Harkes, a midfielder who starred at Wake Forest and is the son of two-time MLS Cup winner John Harkes, took two shots, neither on goal. —
