It took three years, but the Broncos came back to high school volleyball's biggest stage to add another crown to its legacy.

Led by senior Kelsi Meyer, San Juan won the 2A volleyball championship Saturday night in a furious comeback against Enterprise. After the Wolves pulled out a hotly contested first set, San Broncos won the next three — highlighted by a spectacular 16-point rally in the third set to capture momentum.

The title gives coach Cassy Moon her eighth title in 12 seasons at the helm of San Juan, and the program overall has earned 11 titles in the past 16 years. This championship marks a comeback by the program after not placing at all in 2009.

"We said we wanted to be fearless this season, because we haven't won in a long time and no one was expecting us to do this," setter Simone Shumway said. "We totally left the pressure off, and we just played our game."

It was Enterprise who came in with the hotter game to start. Behind the sharp play of senior hitter Tressa Lyman, who had 28 kills and 30 digs in the game, Enterprise edged San Juan in a 25-23 nail-biter. San Juan ran out to a 5-0 lead in the second set and the Wolves never got much closer.

Then there was the third set.

Enterprise exploited Bronco defensive miscues to gain a 19-8 edge in the set. As Lindsey Christensen served, suddenly San Juan seemed unbeatable.

As the Wolves struggled with serves and Meyer and McKale Simpson rained down kills, the Broncos won 16 straight points to help them reclaim the set.

"We knew we had to play to win — one point at a time, one game at a time," said Meyer, who finished with a game-high 32 kills. "We tried to stay calm, even when it got intense."

The Wolves would rally to make the fourth set interesting. The teams swapped serves for seven straight points until Simpson finally landed a spike to give the Broncos the 30-28 set and the match.

"I'm glad we made it this far, but I wanted to win," Lyman said. "That whole set, I was thinking, 'Don't let it drop.' But San Juan is a great team, and we had a good season full of memories together."

Moon said the secret to her program's success has little to do with coaching.

"These girls were amazing," Moon said. "They worked so hard in the summer, and they kept reaching the goals they set. It's been a fun season." —
