EPHRAIM – Snow College football coach Steve Coburn was asked to resign Thursday, and announced longtime offensive coordinator Tyler Hughes will take over as the new head football coach Friday.

Hughes was the Badgers' offensive coordinator for six years and coached at Snow for seven. Snow College president Scott Wyatt declined to give a reason for the change, despite the school's 8-2 record this season and 51-7 mark in Coburn's five seasons. Coburn was defensive coordinator for six seasons, prior to being named head coach.

"We respect Steve and we want him to be successful," Wyatt said.

The Badgers are coming off a Top of the Mountains victory against Iowa Western. Coburn was not available for comment.

"Tyler Hughes brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with a passion for football and Snow College," Wyatt said. "He has been a very skilled offensive coordinator for the college."

Hughes became a part of the Snow program as a player in 1999. Since then, Snow has won four bowl games and has had six consecutive winning seasons and two national championship games.

Before coming to Snow, Hughes spent one season as the offensive coordinator at Murray High School. Hughes prepped at East High School and was an All-Region player before coming to Snow as a wide receiver.

"I love Snow College and have been here for a lot of years between being a player and a coach," said Hughes. "This new role is a great honor and a great privilege. Everything we do I want to do in a first-class manner. I want our staff, our players and everyone who surrounds the program to have high expectations for our performance on and off the field."
