According to Thomas R. Day, if all the illegal immigrants were to leave the United States and return to their respective countries, the United States would be in worse shape than it has been during the past two years ("Immigration in a nutshell: Americans need the workers," Opinion, Dec. 26). I differ with Day.

If all the illegal immigrants were to leave the United States, the 10 percent of unemployment of our legal citizens would go down considerably. Day mentions all the service jobs that the undocumented fill. Visit any construction job, or other business not in the service sector, and see the number of jobs illegal immigrants have that could go to hard-working but unemployed American citizens.

I feel confident that the United States would survive without all the illegal immigrants.
