MOVIES

From the Movie Cricket:

It's a light week for new movie releases — none from the big studios, and just one new film at the Tower (plus Wednesday's opening of "Made in Dagenham" at the Broadway).

The Tower has "Violet Tendencies," a gay comedy that plays like a bad episode of "Friends" — if Chandler and Joey were, as we always suspected, lovers instead of roommates.

The action centers on Violet (played by Mindy Cohn, who you'll remember from "The Facts of Life"), who proudly announces herself as a "fruit fly" — a hetero woman whose best friends are all gay men. Violet is suspecting that her gay friends are keeping her from finding a nice straight guy, so she puts her pals on the back-burner to pursue a relationship with Vern (Armand Anthony), a straitlaced Jack Mormon from Idaho.

There are subplots involving Violet's promiscuous roommate (played by the film's writer, Jesse Archer), and her co-worker Riley (Samuel Whitten) trying to cope when his husband Markus (Casper Andreas, the film's director) starts talking about having kids.

The dialogue is shrill, the performances stilted and the situations hackneyed. Don't bother with this one.

TV

I'm not exactly a big fan of parades on TV, but there is one exception — the Tournament of Roses Parade (9 a.m. Saturday, ABC/Ch. 4, Hallmark and HGTV; 9:30 a.m., NBC/Ch. 5). Those floats are amazing.

And if you're sleeping in, Hallmark will repeat the parade at 11 a.m.
