Kaysville • Davis' pitcher on Wednesday thought his fastball was as good as it's been this season. His coach thought control on the breaking ball was key.

Combine them together, and it was one nice day for Davis senior Ben Rigby.

In the second game of a three-game Region 2 series with Syracuse, Rigby threw a no-hitter against the Titans as the Darts won 6-0.

The big left-hander, who has committed to play at BYU, was perfect through four innings and ended up striking out eight batters.

"The first couple (of games this season), I struggled a little bit and walked a bunch of kids," Rigby said. "I was throwing the hardest I feel like I've ever thrown and my curveball would catch them of guard once in a while."

"I thought he had very good control today. His breaking pitch was very good," Davis coach Dave Leo said. "These guys here, we gave them a steady diet of fastballs yesterday. I think they were looking fastball today and they know Ben can throw hard, but he has very good offspeed stuff — and he used that today."

Davis (9-0, 4-0) defeated Syracuse (5-5, 2-3) on the Titans' home turf on Tuesday, and the second game of the series was a pitchers' duel between Rigby and Syracuse senior Matt Johnson before fielding miscues and bad luck caught up to Johnson in the fourth.

Davis' Dom Fuller singled to left to start the inning. After a groundout, a fly ball to center by Jackson Marler was dropped, putting runners at second and third.

A sacrifice fly to right by Stockton Hall scored Zack Mansfield, and Marler eventually scored on a bloop single to center by Austin Birrell.

In the fifth, another rally plated four runs for Davis. Johnson walked the leadoff batter, Rigby, and gave up a soft single to right by Jackson Knight. Two more walks and a bunt single were the remaining ways the Darts got on base in the fifth.

"That's the beauty of this game. You might hit it today and not touch it tomorrow," Leo said.

Rigby, meanwhile, saw his only real trouble spot in the sixth with walks and a hit batter, but ended up getting out of a bases-loaded jam by inducing a grounder back to himself with two outs.

"I went up to him and said, 'They're not hitting you. I see guys all around here; how'd they get here?'" Leo said. "I said, 'Let's throw some strikes.'"

The two squads are scheduled to wrap up the series Friday at Syracuse. Another win would put Davis in prime position for another playoff berth, if not more.

"I think we can go far. We have seven returning starters from last year and we did pretty well last year," Rigby said. "I'm excited to see what we can do." —
