Riverton • An 80-year-old man was in critical condition after running a red light crossing Bangerter Highway and colliding with three vehicles Wednesday afternoon.

The driver of a maroon Chevrolet Malibu ran the red light heading west on 12600 South around 1: 30 p.m., said Unified Police Department Officer Kelly Bailey.

Three vehicles heading north on Bangerter hit the Malibu. A Ford Explorer in the left-hand turn lane on Bangerter was also hit by a truck that had hit the Malibu, Bailey said.

The five-car accident put three people in the hospital. The driver of the Malibu was taken in critical condition to Intermountain Medical Center; two others were transported there in fair condition.

Michelle Wilson, the driver of the Ford Explorer, said she was waiting at a red light in the turn lane when she saw a northbound truck hit the Malibu and continue toward her.

"I wanted to drive off so I didn't get hit," Wilson said, but added that she didn't want to move and cause more problems. "It just happened too fast to even think about it."

Wilson was heading south on Bangerter to Riverton Hospital to take one of her children to a doctor's appointment when the accident happened. Everyone in the Explorer, including a 16-month-old boy, was OK.

The driver of the Malibu will be cited for running the red light, Bailey said.
