"Crime After Crime"U.S. Documentary competition*** 1/2The persistence of two pro bono lawyers trying to get Deborah Peagler out of prison — after a quarter-century incarcerated for the murder of her husband, when California law allowed evidence of the husband's abuse to be added to the court record — is matched by the persistence of filmmaker Yoav Potash to tell the story. With intimate interviews and hard-headed investigative skills, the movie paints rich portraits of the convicted woman and her lawyers, while uncovering official corruption that added to the injustice against Peagler. This may be the most heartwrenching courtroom drama you'll see all year.
