No surprise here, but Juan Diego star soccer player Vicki Shimkus today officially signed a letter of intent to play at St. Mary's College starting next year. Shimkus, The Tribune's 3A MVP, scored 32 goals to help the Soaring Eagle to a second-consecutive state championship last fall.

Shimkus is a member of a three-athlete class at St. Mary's. The Gaels also announced the signing of Brooke Herrick, from Plano, Texas, and Kaytlyn Steele from Custer, Wash.

In a press release from the school, coach Kai Edwards had high praise for Shimkus.

"Vicki has the talent and passion to be special in the WCC," Edwards said. "She is a goal scoring center midfielder with heart and passion to win games at the top level. She possesses very good vision and will impact the game from moment one. We are very excited to watch her grow into a top class player and, to be honest, compete to make our youth National team."
