Provo • Regarded by many as the best backcourt tandem in school history, seniors Jimmer Fredette and Jackson Emery rightfully received the biggest roars from the crowd Saturday afternoon when they took their turns cutting down the nets at the Marriott Center after No. 3 BYU's 102-78 conference title-clinching win against Wyoming.

But Brandon Davies was a close third.

Yes, Brandon Davies.

In what was a surprise to some, the sophomore center, who BYU officials said Tuesday wouldn't be allowed to "represent" the school for the remainder of the season due to an honor-code violation, was allowed to sit on the Cougars' bench during the game — decked out in a white shirt and tie.

"Yeah, we thought it would be a good idea to have him here. He wanted to come," coach Dave Rose said.

The student section, some 5,000 strong, chanted, "We love Brandon!" and "We love Davies!" before the game and during timeouts, but saved its biggest roar — "Davies! Davies!" — for the moment when Davies climbed the ladder to cut down a piece of the net.

Fredette, who scored 38 points, the 19th time in his career that he has scored 30 or more, said the players wanted to have their suspended teammate with them this time after he did not attend Wednesday's 82-64 loss to New Mexico at the Marriott Center.

"It meant a lot to have him here," Fredette said. "He's like a brother to us, and we've had a lot of good times together. He's been here two years with us, and he's a huge part of this team. To have him on the sideline feels right. It feels right to have him there with us, enjoying this moment, instead of him not being there."

Emery, who scored 11 of his 18 points in the second half, had two reasons to celebrate on Saturday. His brother Nick is a sophomore on the Lone Peak team that won the state 5A prep championship. The brothers' parents chose to attend the BYU game because it was Jackson's last one at the Marriott Center, he said.

"It has been a roller coaster of emotions [this week]," Jackson Emery said. "You have your ups and your downs, but you move on. It was great to have Brandon on the sideline with us to enjoy this moment with us because he deserves it as much as anyone on this team."

The third senior honored Saturday, Logan Magnusson, has seen his minutes increase in Davies' absence. While he will never be the scorer that Davies is, Magnusson took over Davies' role as the designated charge-taker. He drew three offensive fouls Saturday, while also handing out four assists and grabbing six rebounds. —
