Stilman White, a 6-foot-1 senior point guard from Wilmington, N.C., came to the Mountain West Conference basketball tournament to cheer on his favorite college basketball team, the University of Utah Utes. Along the way, he got a scholarship offer from Utah's biggest rival — BYU. White confirmed Friday in Las Vegas that BYU assistant coach Dave Rice told his father (a University of Utah graduate) that the Cougars were indeed offering the product of Wilmington's Hoggard High a scholarship. BYU is the third school to offer White, along with Utah State and UNC Wilmington. White said he has also been talking to North Carolina, and attended the recent UNC-Duke game as a guest of coach Roy Williams, but does not have a scholarship offer yet from UNC. Hoggard plays in the largest division of North Carolina prep basketball, 4A. White averaged 20.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and four assists per game his senior season at Hoggard. He made 50.6 percent of his field goal tries, 35.9 percent of his three-point attempts. White said the BYU offer came through his father and that he has not talked in person to a BYU coach yet. "My recruiting has really picked up lately," he said. White's recruitment was slowed because he missed the last half of his junior season after having knee surgery for a torn meniscus. He played well over the summer for an AAU team known as Flight 22. As for Utah, which is his family's favorite school, White said he hasn't heard from the Utes yet. White is LDS and said he plans on going on a church mission, but isn't sure whether he will play a year of college basketball before his mission, or go right out of high school. He said the BYU offer is not contingent on him going on a mission first. The news that BYU has made a scholarship offer is a surprise to BYU fans because the Cougars had supposedly given their last available scholarship to UCLA transfer Matt Carlino in December. Carlino will join the team after fall semester, due to NCAA transfer rules. The offer likely means one of two things: 1) BYU expects suspended center Brandon Davies will not return to the team in time for the 2011-12 season. 2) BYU coaches will run off a player currently on scholarship if White commits. Coach Dave Rose has reminded reporters several times that scholarship agreements are year-to-year.
