Provo police arrested a woman on suspicion of arson early Tuesday, just hours after two people died in an apartment complex fire that also critically injured a third person.
Deputy Fire Chief Gary Jolley confirmed Yvette J. Kimber, 45, of Provo, had been arrested overnight and booked into Utah County Jail. She was being held without bail on suspicion of aggravated arson and two counts of manslaughter.
Jolley did not provide further details on what led to Kimber's arrest, and calls to Provo police seeking information on the arrest were not initially returned.
Jolley said the two dead residents from Monday night's fire at The Boulders Apartments, near 750 South 650 West, had been identified as Karen Murray and Catherine Crane. Their ages were not immediately available.
A third woman, age 41, jumped from her second-floor apartment to escape the flames Monday night. She was stabilized at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center and then transported to the University of Utah Hospital's Burn Center in Salt Lake City. She remained in critical condition Tuesday, having suffered a fracture to her pelvis and inhalation burns, Jolley said.
The fire was reported about 9 p.m. in a 12-unit building. Six of the apartments were badly burned, Jolley said. As of 11 p.m., crews had subdued the flames and were waiting for fumes and smoke to dissipate before sending fire investigators in, Jolley said.
It is the second fatal fire in just over two years at The Boulders. In January 2009, 55-year-old Karen Jorgensen died in a fire that destroyed 12 apartments at the complex. A man also was injured while escaping that fire.
Monday's fire broke out in the building across from the building damaged in the 2009 fire.
