The Utah Tax Commission unanimously chose Barry Conover to be the executive director at its board meeting Thursday morning.

Conover's selection wasn't much of a surprise, given that he had been serving as the interim director for the past five months and is a 38-year veteran working at the Tax Commission.

The vote was 4-0.

Tax Commission Chairman Bruce Johnson said Conover was the clear choice after consulting with Gov. Gary Herbert.

"His leadership skills, management of computer modernization projects and hands-on experience with our various divisions are great assets to the Tax Commission and the general public," Johnson said in a statement.

In his role as executive director, Conover will oversee 750 employees, as well as the day-to-day operations of the Tax Commission.

The 63-year-old Conover took over for Rodney Marrelli, who died in October.
