The Utah Department of Transportation is ready for the construction season with a list of 180 highway projects ringing in at $1.3 billion.
On Wednesday, UDOT announced its top 10 projects, led by a $249 million effort kicking off later this month to simultaneously build five new freeway-style interchanges on Bangerter Highway in southwest Salt Lake County. These interchanges, with a completion date scheduled in late 2018, will be constructed at 5400 South, 7000 South, 9000 South and 11400 South. One interchange is already under construction at 600 West.
Four of the top 10 projects are in southern and eastern Utah, while three are in Salt Lake County.
No. 2 • Second on the list is continuing work and scheduled completion late this year of reconstruction of Interstate 215 between 4700 South and State Road 201. The $105 million project includes replacement of bridges, highway widening, and upgraded signals and traffic management systems.
No. 3 • Mountain View Corridor construction continues from last year with a scheduled 2018 end date on the $168 million project spanning two counties. In Salt Lake County, work focuses on a stretch between 5400 South and 4100 South. Beginning in the fall, the highway will be extended in Utah County from the Redwood Road-2100 North intersection to State Road 73.
No. 4 • In southern Utah, crews will add auxiliary lanes on Interstate 15 between Brigham Road and Dixie Drive. The $28 million project is set to be finished late this year.
No. 5 • Construction starts this spring on 10600 South interchange improvements and widening, at a cost of $31 million. The work includes a new underpass at the I-15 and 10600 South interchange. Road widening will occur from I-15 to Redwood Road.
No. 6 • Three major projects on Redwood Road will cost $97 million: a new diverging diamond interchange at I-215 in North Salt Lake, widening from two lanes to seven a section between 12600 South and Bangerter Highway, widening to five lanes between 400 South and Stillwater Parkway and installing a new continuous-flow intersection at Pioneer Crossing in Saratoga Springs. Scheduled completion is late 2018.
No. 7 • Crews will repave a 2.5-mile stretch of Interstate 80 from 1300 East to Foothill Drive, which supports more than 93,000 vehicles a day. The $12 million project will wrap up in the fall.
No. 8 • The U.S. 6-U.S. 191 Corridor in Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan counties will see 13 projects at a cost of $43 million. They include road widening, intersection improvement and paving. All are set to be finished in the fall.
No. 9 • A six-mile stretch of U.S. 40 in Duchesne County will be widened to five lanes. Called the Myton Bench widening, the $35 million project will add new travel lanes and shoulders with the aim of more safely moving traffic between the Wasatch Front and the Uinta Basin. Work is scheduled for completion in the fall.
No. 10 • Construction begins in May for resurfacing of Interstate 70 from Richfield South to Richfield North, a four-mile section. Scheduled to end in the fall, the $15 million project includes bridge maintenance.
