Spanish Fork • Grand lost six seniors from its 2010 state champion softball team.

Thank heavens Shelby Dalton wasn't one of them.

After leading the Red Devils to one championship, the senior pitcher has them on pace for another.

Dalton dominated the first day of the 2A state tournament Thursday, beating both Beaver and Enterprise, the No. 1 seed from Region 13. In the 5-0 win against the Wolves, Dalton retired the first 13 batters and struck out 14.

Typical. Dalton averages 10 strikeouts per game, but after her stellar second outing she was more focused on moving on. She said beating another state favorite was a big confidence booster for Grand, which starts only two seniors and one junior.

"We're just trying to get the rest of the girls on track that we can do this," she said. "We have a really good chance."

Grand entered the 2A tournament as the No. 2 seed from Region 15, but Thursday it looked second to no one.

That, of course, started with Dalton, but was bolstered by the help she got on the offensive side. In the third inning, the Devils got singles from Taylor Hren and Merina Toninelli. The hits, along with an error and hit batter, helped Grand to a 3-0 lead. It tacked on two more for insurance in the seventh.

North Sevier 8, Gunnison 5 • The Wolves escaped a bases-loaded jam to knock off the Gunnison Bulldogs and advance to a quarterfinal showdown with Grand. North Sevier, the No. 5 seed from Region 15, was the surprise of the day, earlier beating No. 1 seed South Summit 5-4.

Millard 15, South Sevier 0 • In two games Thursday, Millard outscored its opponents 32-1. Against South Sevier, the Eagles had 16 hits and, having earlier beaten Rowland Hall, pitcher Shelby Sheriff picked up her second win of the day. South Sevier moves to the consolation bracket Friday, after upsetting Altamont in its first game Thursday.

San Juan 11, Parowan 0 • Three Broncos players hit home runs as Region 15's top seed continued its push through the 2A bracket. San Juan blasted Kanab in its first game and didn't let up later against the Rams. Senior Abby Bayles and sophomores Brook Lyman and L'Sha Eldgredge all hit homers as San Juan advanced.
